How to treat excessive sweating at my palms?

Doctor's Answers 1

Hi,

Sweaty palms can indeed be frustrating as it can interfere with daily activities.

There are a few treatment options. The simplest method is to use anti-pespirants containing aluminium salts.

Another option is iontophoreresis. This involves soaking the hands in water or a solution containing glycopyrolate snd running a current through it. This treament has to be repeat weekly.

Botulinium toxin injections is another option and this can keep the hands dry for up to 6 months.

Another option is surgery. This is the most permanent solution but does have surgical risks.

You can discuss these options further with your dermatologist.

Is it necessary to do a comprehensive patch test for eczema in Singapore?

First things first – you can certainly tell your dermatologist that you are keen on a patch test the next time you visit him, especially with your recent flare up. He will tell you why it is or isn’t indicated for your situation. But even so, the test needs to be done on clear skin, meaning you need to get your eczema under control first before the patch test can be carried out. The reason why your doctor prescribed steroid cream is because that’s the correct treatment for your eczema.

Should I see a dermatologist for itchy palms?

I fully agree with Dr Ethan’s answer. The commonest cause if hand itch is hand eczema. Hand eczema can be aggravated by use of soap and detergents and contact with irritants so this should be minimized. Sometimes, you may noticed tiny bubbles on your hands and this a form of hand eczema called dyshidrotic eczema. Psoriasis and contact dermatitis are other possible causes. The general measures for hand protection suggested by Dr Ethan are excellent. However, if the itch or rash is persistent, it is best to see your dermatologist or gp to get it assessed and treated.
