What treatment would you recommend for pockmarks and acne scars on the face (image)?

Thank you for the question and the accompanying photos. It seems that you have a combination of a few types of acne scars, with acne pigmentation marks, and may still be suffering from occasional acne.

As a first step, I would recommend a 3-5 sessions of subcision to remodel the floor of the deep scars, raise them up, such that they become more level with the surrounding skin. I usually complement the subcision sessions with Rejuran S. This product contains PN/PDRN extracted from salmon sources and has been shown to be effective in raising deep scars while stimulating collagen within the atrophic scars.

As a second step, I would recommend a course of fractional resurfacing laser through the FOTONA SP Dynamis. The Erbium YAG laser energy from this machine are stable and precise, allowing us to provide a controlled resurfacing of the skin, giving a smoother texture.

Throughout the treatment process, we will need to treat concurrent acne breakouts, as they are a source of new acne scar development. These usually include topical creams, medical extractions, and antibiotics.

Hope that helps!

Thank you.

For better results, is it advisable to undergo acne scar treatment when younger and in my 20s, as opposed to when I am in my 30s or 40s?

Hi, The most important age factor to consider when to undergo acne scar treatment is not the age per say but when the acne is no longer active. This is because continued active acne will result in new scars and undo the benefits of the acne scar treatment. For some patients, active acne may persist way into their 20’s and even 30’s. In my experience, the clinical response to acne scar treatment is quite similar when treatment is done in the 20’s or in the 30-40’s. Hope this helps!

How do I treat acne marks as compared to acne scars? (photo)

Hi, Acne marks (post-inflammatory erythema and hyperpigmentation) will gradually fade on their own over several weeks/months, so do not worry. It is important to prevent new acne from occurring (check out the Acne section for the various strategies to do so) as new acne will cause new marks to occur. Hope this helps.
