How can I identify a facial flat wart?

Doctor's Answer

Plane warts usually appear on the skin as warty spots with a flat surface. Common areas where they can be found include the face and hands. Usually, several plane warts can be found in an area.

These are caused by the human papilloma (HPV) virus and can be spread by direct skin-to-skin contact or it may spread within areas of injury, eg from shaving or after scratching an area.

People with eczema or other skin rashes that result in a defective skin barrier are at increased risk of developing warts. People with a suppressed immune system are also at an increased risk.

Treatment options would include:

  1. Freezing with liquid nitrogen
  2. Electrocautery
  3. CO2 laser

Do see a doctor or dermatologist so that he/she may assess any unusual facial skin lesions as plane warts can often be mistaken for something else. Early treatment can minimise the risk of it spreading to other people and also other areas.
