Is it a medical emergency if there is blood in the eye causing reduced vision?

Doctor's Answer

I'm sorry to hear about your Mums condition.

Blood in the eye causing reduced vision may, or may not be an emergent condition. It really depends on the location of the blood, and whether it is associated with other pathology in the eye.

If the blood is simply located in the vitreous, and is not associated with any emergent conditions (like retina detachment, or breakthrough bleeding from a massive submacular bleed), then certainly waiting for a week would not be inappropriate.

If the blood is located in the submacular space, or the vitreous hemorrhage is associated with a retinal detachment, then it would be of some urgency for this to be managed. Do try to clarify this matter, and best of luck for your Mums treatment!
