It depends.
There are many reasons why a patient may not be happy with their current composite veneers. These include:
1) Unsatisfactory shade
A problem that is encountered with darkened or discoloured teeth. A very thin layer of composite may be insufficient to mask the discolouration. Additional treatment such as bleaching may be required prior to veneering.
2) Unsatisfactory shape
The veneer may have disproportionate dimensions that may make the teeth look too narrow, too squat etc. Additional procedures such as crown lengthening or braces may be required to optimize the space available for a good veneer result.
3) Staining
This can be a problem if the veneers are being exposed to coffee, tea, red wine or tobacco. If the tooth surface was contaminated during the veneer placement, the margins or the veneer itself may be more prone to staining. If the staining is minor, a quick repolishing can rejuvenate the veneer in minutes.
Gum recession over time may also expose the edges (margins) of the veneer and these may accumulate stains.
4) Chipping or breakage
Composite degrades in the mouth over time. This slow weakening of the composite may lead to chipping of the edges or breakage, especially if used to bite into hard foods (bones, ice, shellfish etc).
5) Tooth movement
After veneers, the teeth can still undergo drifting which will make the veneers misaligned. Retainers are essential to prevent this from happening.
Some of these issues can be fixed with a remake or adjustment of the current composite veneers. Some issuees require remedial procedures before remaking the veneers.
Some patients also switch to porcelain veneers or even crowns if new composite veneers are not suitable. Your dentist will be able to guide you on what will be a suitable solution.
