What are haemorrhoids? Is this a haemorrhoid? (photo)

What are Haemorrhoids?

Haemorrhoids are anal cushions in your anal canal that help to keep your anus from leaking gas or stools. If these cushions are overstretched (usually from excessive straining when passing stools) these anal cushions can prolapse out of the anus. Sometimes they can bleed as the cushions are full of blood vessels.

Treatment:

Haemorrhoids can be treated and symptoms can be resolved with the appropriate treatment. You will need to see a colorectal surgeon for the treatment.

As for the photo attached, it appears to be a model of the anus.

How do doctors determine when surgery for haemorrhoids is necessary?

In general, surgery is recommended for cases not responding to other non-surgical treatment methods such as oral medication, local therapy or band ligation. In cases with advanced grade or severe disturbing symptoms including recurrent bleeding, constant pain or discomfort due to thromobosis, surgery may be advised as a more definitive treatment method. Just as an aside, rubber band ligation is not suitable for all cases. External piles should not be treated with band ligation due to the rich nerve supply around the anal skin. Doing so can be too painful for anyone to bear.

Can I have haemorrhoid surgery if my episiotomy wound hasn't recovered?

It is very uncommon for a lady to need haemorrhoid surgery while recovering from childbirth and episiotomy. I usually recommend conservative treatments that allay the symptoms from haemorrhoids during the early post-childbirth period as the pelvic floor tends to be swollen. When the pelvic floor is swollen, the haemorrhoids arppear larger than usual. With the conservative treatment, most ladies will notice the haemorrhoids recover spontaneously and many do not require surgery at all.
