Why are laser treatments now compatible with concurrent Accutane (isotretinoin) treatments when previously they were not?

Doctor's Answers 1

Isotretinoin treatment shrinks the sebaceous glands and was felt previously that this may reduce normal wound healing after skin injury. Hence, the prudent recommendation of laser treatments that injure the skin significantly should be avoided while on isotretinoin therapy.

Subsequent retrospective studies did not show increased scarring from laser treatments while on isotretinoin therapy, leading to the considered recommendation that it is safe to perform laser treatments while on isotretinoin.

Nevertheless, it is best that you discuss with your preferred Aesthetic Doctor whether or not to proceed with laser treatment while on isotretinoin therapy. This is based on your normal wound healing pattern, the urgency of laser treatment and the aggressiveness of the laser treatment being considered.

Can I undergo fractional C02 or Infini treatment while on low dose Isotretinoin?

Sorry to hear that you are suffering from acne scars. Low dose isotretinoin (Accutane) is increasingly being used for acne. Many patients on isotretinoin also have scarring from previous acne. It is best to start scarring treatment early, but there remains some concern with abnormal scarring while on isotretinoin. Can you undergo fractional CO2 or Infini treatment while on low dose Isotretinoin? It is safe to proceed with fractional CO2 laser or radiofrequency microneedling while on low dose Isotretinoin.

Is retacnyl, laser treatments or chemical peels more effective for eliminating acne scars?

Hi Aaron – I completely agree with whatever your doctor has done. I had asked about accutane but my doctor was hesitant in prescribing to me due to my history with depression. I’d err on the side of caution as well, as depression, although rare, is one of the side effects of accutane. Moreover, you described your acne as mild so accutane would be an overkill. My dermatologist said that the retacnyl will help to clear my acne(very few) and my dark spots and mild acne scars. Would it actually help to eliminate my acne scars?
