What causes milk lactation when one is not pregnant?

Doctor's Answers 1

The most important cause of galactorrhoea (milk production not associated with pregnancy) is to exclude a problem with the pituitary gland. The pituitary gland produces a hormone called prolactin. A rise in prolactin levels usually occurs during pregnancy and leads to breast milk production. Galactorrhea can occur in women with a noncancerous tumor of the pituitary gland (prolactinoma) or other disorder of the pituitary gland. Treatment may involve medication or even surgery so it is best to see a gynaecologist if this happens.

Other causes include:

  • stress,
  • herbal supplements (fenugreek),
  • oral contraceptives,
  • medications (antidepressants, sedatives, high blood pressure drugs and opioid analgesia) and
  • hypothyroidism.

How long should I wait before seeing a doctor if my period is late?

If your period has already been late by 3 months and you have already ruled out the possibility of pregnancy, then it would be advisable to see a doctor for this as soon as possible. This is so that we can do further investigations to rule out other causes of a delayed period. You may also be given medications to induce your periods as a prolonged time of not getting your period can potentially lead to an unhealthy womb lining.

What should I do next after getting positive results from a pregnancy test kit?

First and foremost, congratulations in being pregnant! It is advisable for you to seek a detailed consultation with your gynaecologist who can then confirm that you are indeed pregnant and also the gestation of your pregnancy. This can be done via a urine pregnancy test, pregnancy hormone blood test (BHCG) and an ultrasound scan. The ultrasound scan is used to confirm the presence of one or more gestation sacs / pregnancy sacs (as multiple pregnancies are possible) in the womb and also the presence or absence of a fetal pole and fetal heart.
