This is a great question.

First we have to understand why this happens.

The middle ear space is linked to the back of the nose via the auditory tube as below.

Sometimes a really bad infection, like a sinus infection can cause the phelgm to actually go into the middle ear space via the auditory tube.

After this phelgm goes inside, it kind of stays there and cause a blocked feeling of the eardrum.

1) You could try the valsalva maneuver.

Try to close your nose and blow gently. If it hurts, you have to stop.

You also can try to blow through a straw. There are other ways as well, you can try to google.

2) If it fails or hurts, you might need to see a doctor. You might even need antibiotics or other treatment.

3) Try to avoid taking a flight or diving while you are having this.

Take care!

Do I have an ear infection after cleaning my ear with a Q-tip?

Thank you for your question. Yes, Q-tips or any other cotton buds are not meant to be inserted into the ear canals as they are too big! You will end up pushing your earwax deeper into the ear canal or may damage the lining of the ear and cause an ear infection. I’ve also seen broken Q-tips lodged in the ear canal or puncturing the eardrum! It sounds like you may have developed an ear canal infection (also known as otitis externa) and given topical antibiotics by your GP.

Is it possible to prevent the onset of croup and barking cough in paediatric patients?

Croup is a viral infectious respiratory illness affecting mainly the voicebox, windpipe and sometimes the lungs. Many viruses can cause croup, including those responsible for the common cold and flu. Hence, the measure to prevent a croup are similar to that for a common cold. These include practising good hand hygiene (by washing your hands regularly), coughing and sneezing into a tissue or into the elbow, cleaning surfaces regularly, avoiding food/drink sharing and keeping your children's immunization up to date.
