Where can I be tested for mycoplasma genitalium in Singapore?

Doctor's Answers 1

Mycoplasma genitalium, also commonly known as MG or Mgen, is a sexually transmitted bacteria. You can get it from someone who has it and it can be transmitted via any forms of sexual contact. It is possible to have Mgen and not know that you actually have it. It can happen to both men and women although the symptoms are different.

Here are some symptoms that the females may have:

  • Pain during sex,
  • Bleeding between menstrual cycles,
  • Bleeding after sex,
  • Extended pain from your belly button to pelvic area.

Meanwhile, here are some symptoms that the males may encounter:

  • Pain when peeing - burning and stinging sensation,
  • Watery discharge from your private area.

You will be required to give a sample of your pee and a test swab from the urethra or cervix. You can check with your GP/Urologist or DSC clinic as Mycoplasma genitalium can be tested for at most laboratories.

Can I get any STIs from using toilet paper that came into contact with my genitals?

I would not say that it is impossible, just because I have never seen it before. But medically speaking, it is next to impossible. That is unless the toilet paper looks like it is full of pus and bodily fluids. Otherwise most of these viruses and bacteria are actually quite fragile, they do not survive in the open air for long.

How is Mycoplasma genitalium transmitted?

Hi Maddy Thanks for bringing up Mycoplasma Genitalium, which is a common Sexually Transmitted Infection (STI) in young adults that not many people are aware about. Mycoplasma Genitalium is a bacteria which is transmitted through sexual contact, most commonly through vaginal and anal sex. It may possibly be transmitted through oral sex, although the bacteria has very rarely been found in patient's throats.
