What pills can I take to induce a period without weight gain as a side effect?

Doctor's Answers 1

Weight gain is one of the unwanted side effects of some oral contraceptive pills. This is the result of water retention rather than the accumulation of fat. The more premium oral contraceptive pills that contain progesterone in the form of drospirenone will not cause bloating or weight gain.

This is because drospirenone acts like natural progesterone and counteracts the mechanism that causes water retention and therefore bloating. Examples of oral contraceptives which contain drospirenone include Yasmin and Yaz. In addition to their contraceptive effects, they will regulate your menses for you.

What’s the relationship between antidepressants like sertraline (Zoloft) and weight gain?

You are quite right that antidepressants tend to cause weight gain. The reason for doing so is not completely understood, but doctors think that it could be related to the better mood of the patient on these medications. When the patients feel better and get well, they eat better, makes sense? Nonetheless, not all antidepressants are the same. The one that you mentioned like sertraline, actually is one of the ones that are "weight neutral", or one of the ones that causes the least weight gain. If you are concerned, you should speak to your doctor about the medication you are on.
