Is Platelet-rich Plasma therapy (PRP) safe while on Accutane?

Doctor's Answers 1

Platelet-rich plasma is basically activating concentrated platelet cells to produce large amounts of growth factors. These are necessary for healing and regeneration and growth of tissue. In fact, platelet-rich plasma therapy (PRP) is popular overseas with facial skin texture and complexion rejuvenation.

To answer your question, yes. It is safe while you are on Accutane as it is purely your own blood by-products. In addition, it stimulates healing and growth [1]. In fact, its effects may be even better as Accutane makes your skin more able to absorb the growth factors of PRP.

Is it possible to be rid of acne and bumps on my face entirely?

Nothing in life is permanent. It is true! except scars. So you are right, its important that we try to minimise the outbreaks when possible. If you are a male patient, I would opt to do Accutane and then tail down the dose and keep on a very low maintenance dose (which virtually eliminates side effects) and yet keeps the oiliness and pimples at bay. Topical products actually play a huge role in skin care. I have seen so many patients who come completely clueless, and using the most oily Korean moisturisers for their already oily skin--- because Korean stars are using it.

How long does Accutane take to work for acne?

Hi, Accutane can cause initial flares but this is usually related to the starting dose ie. a higher starting dose tend to have a higher risks of flares initially. Personally, I start my patients on a lower dose for the 1st month and adjust accordingly subsequently. As what Dr Colin has mentioned, I will definitely advise to cease any topicals that can cause additional irritation such as Benzoyl peroxide, astringents, acid based products etc.
