What are the signs of gingivitis?

Gingivitis is a reversible inflammation of the gums without associated alveolar bone loss. Gingivitis has multiple causes but the most common cause is bacterial plaque (a sticky mass of bacteria known as biofilm that grows clumped together on the surfaces of teeth and other appliances in the mouth such as braces or dentures).

How can I treat a persistent lip ulcer that has been present for months?

I would see a dermatologist, who is also trained in identifying and managing diseases of both the skin and the mucosa (lining of the mouth), for evaluation and management. Lip ulcers that are persistent could be a sign of a viral infection (herpes simplex), a venous malformation, or a traumatized salivary gland (mucocele). It could also be something more serious like an actinic keratosis.
