How should I prepare for a Pap smear?

Doctor's Answers 2

The pap smear is one of the commonest methods for screening for cervical cancer. There are some tips I would advise in order for an accurate sample to be taken. I would advise you to

  • Not to schedule the pap smear when you are having menses. Do it a week after the menses has ended.
  • Not to douche the vagina for two days before the test.
  • Avoid unprotected vaginal intercourse at least 2 days before the test.
  • Avoid using any vaginal medications before the test (unless indicated by your doctor)

Pap smears should be scheduled to be done 1 week before the start of your period, or 1 week after the last day of your period.

Avoid vaginal intercourse for at least 2 days before your test.

Avoid using any vaginal medications (unless instructed by your doctor), spermicidal foams or creams, or douching for at least 2 days before your pap smear.

As you would need to undress from waist down, wear easily removable clothing on the day of your appointment.

Where should I go to confirm a diagnosis of PCOS in Singapore?

I agree that seeing a gynaecologist directly might make the most sense as regardless of history taking by the GP, the ultimate confirmatory diagnosis is still ultrasound of your ovaries. They would be better placed to discuss with you on treatment modalities.

Can pregnant ladies do Brazilian IPL?

As correctly mentioned, there is no link between IPL and fetal effect in pregnancy. In my current practice, I advise my patients to consider IPL/Laser/Aesthetic treatments only after pregnancy and breast-feeding. Hope that this helps!
