What is the best treatment for recurring acne (image)?

Doctor's Answers 3

For patients with recurrent acne, it is important to take a detailed history of the condition.

I have come across some cases of recurrent acne that have never consulted a doctor and just relied on OTC products.

For such cases, we can still be conservative in our approach and offer them the appropriate topical acne treatments like:

  • Adapalene
  • Retin A
  • Benzyl Peroxide
  • Clindamycin

However, for those who have tried topical treatments with no success then we need to consider the addition of oral medications like Isotretinion and antibiotics like doxycycline and minocycline.

For those not keen on oral medications and or having recurrent acne in a localised area of the face they can consider the Agnes RF for acne. This is a micro needle RF device that delivers RF energy to destroy the pilo sebaceous glands that are overactive leading to recurrrent acne. Once destroyed, they stop producing the sebum that causes the clogged pores leading to acne in that area.

It is an extremely effective treatment that targets the root cause of recurrent acne.

It is important for the doctor to discuss the various options available and then come up with a treatment plan that is acceptable by the patient to ensure compliance.

Hope this helps!

Firstly, I would like to emphasise that in patients with recurrent acne it is important to take a detailed history of the problem.

I have come across cases whereby the patient had only self medicated with OTC products which did not improve their recurrent acne. In such cases a more conservative approach using topical agents like adapalene, retin A, benzyl peroxide and clindamycin can be considered first.

In those cases who have experienced treatment failures with topicals, oral medications in the form of isotretinion and antibiotics like doxycycline and minocycline can be considered.

For those who do not wish to be on oral medications, there is a micro needle RF device called Agnes RF. This is a effective treatment for recurrent acne , especially in those localised to a specific area like the chin, forehead or cheeks. The device works by delivering RF energy to destroy the pilo sebaceous glands which are overactive in secreting sebum thus causing the ducts and pores to be clogged up leading to acne.

Once the glands are destroyed the sebum dries up and the clogged pores are cleared leading to resolution of the acne. Lasers for active recurrent acne like the Dual Yellow laser, Long pulsed ND yag 1064nm in Laser Genesis and Clarity Laser 2 are also effective.

Hope this helps!

How to best improve my pitted complexion? (photo)

Hi, Thank you for your enquiry. There are several treatments for your acne scars. You have mixed types of acne scars consisting of box-car acne scars, rolling acne scars and a few ice-pick scars. I routinely use a combination of energy-based devices (CO2 Fractional Lasers, INFINI RF, Pico Fractional Lasers), Subcision, Rejuran and TCA Cross to treat acne scars. A few points to note regarding acne scar treatments in Singapore: 1. A Combination of Treatments are required for best results - there is no 1 perfect treatment that can treat all types of scars.

Which lasers are best for red and brown acne pigmentation on the face? (photo)

As inflammation from an acne breakout resolves, it may leave behind residual redness (post-inflammatory erythema, PIE), brown pigmentation (post-inflammatory pigmentation, PIH), or true scars (pitted or raised). Often times, a patient may have any combination of PIE, PIH and true scars. Developing new scars often have redness within them as well. Although PIE and PIH tend to resolve over time (as opposed to permanent true scars), these blemishes are understandably frustrating and treatment is commonly requested.
