How would removing healthy bicuspids affect my bite? (photo)

Doctor's Answers 1

When patients come to visit me for an orthodontic consultation, one of the most common questions is, “Must I have extraction?” While not all patients require extraction for the orthodontic treatment, sometimes it is unavoidable.

The purpose of extraction is to:

  • Make sufficient space to correct crowding of teeth,
  • Placing teeth in the most ideal position in the dental arch in order to improve the facial profile
  • Improve bite.

I understand that there is a moderate degree of crowding for your upper and lower teeth. As a result, teeth are not in good alignment and the upper and lower teeth are not biting in the optimal position against each other. The removal of bicuspid will be able to provide sufficient space for your orthodontist to align your teeth and correct the biting relationship of your teeth.

Is getting jaw surgery worth it for an underbite?

Thanks for the question. An underbite (mandibular prognathism) is a type of dental misalignment (malocclusion) in which one’s lower jaw protrudes or extends further than the upper jaw.

How are dental crowns removed, and is it a challenging procedure?

Crowns may be removed in one piece but this is rarely the case unless the existing crown does not fit well or if there is significant decay in the tooth structure underneath the crown that has undermined the fit. Most of the time, the method used to remove crowns involves sectioning the crown and removing the segments separately. This minimizes the chances of the underlying tooth breaking. Non precious metal crowns are made of very hard metal alloys. These crowns can be removed with special metal-cutting burs but due to the nature of the metal alloy, sectioning can take some time to complete.
