You have to look at two things. The most important thing when it comes to the happiness and success of the patient is,

  1. The surgeon and
  2. The equipment.

So of course whether it’s cataract surgery, heart surgery or hip surgery, it is probably dollar for dollar whether you do these things in Malaysia or Singapore. The most important is that you get the doctors qualifications and the equipment. When you come, it is important that you are comfortable with what the doctor is telling you, whether he can answer your questions, and whether he has told you the risk and benefits of undergoing the procedures, including giving you the widest range of options about what you can do.

Sometimes the solution is to do nothing or wait a little while if there is no need to go forward. A doctor will be able to tell you the pros and cons of each procedure and whether it's right for each individual and they can only do that if they spend sufficient time with patients and finding out their needs. So keep these things in mind, the skill and experience of the doctor and the quality of the technology in their centre. Finally, it depends on how you feel about the doctor and whether they can answer your questions and feel comfortable going forward with the procedure.

Is cataract surgery the last option for cataract treatment?

You are right to say that. Most cataracts actually are not usually threatening. The only time you want to do surgery is if it affects your vision, making it blurry vision, making your life miserable, or it causes other complications like glaucoma, causing something called angle-closure glaucoma and flukes in vision. Maybe there is something wrong with the retina at the back of your eye and cataracts get in the way which makes investigation or diagnosis of retina conditions a problem. That is more reason to undergo surgery.
