How can sex help with depression?

Doctor's Answers 1

The relationship between sex and mood problems can be complicated and there are many types [1].

First, most people who are depressed tend to have a decrease in appetite, weight loss and decreased interest in sex. Once their mood improves, their interest in sex may also be restored. It is important to lead a normal lifestyle as that will aid in the recovery process. Besides, it helps in restoring one's self-esteem and helps to maintain a healthy relationship with their partner.

Second, a poor relationship between the couple may be the cause of a person's low mood. So in clinical practice, it is important to examine a person's intimate relationship to see if changes can take place to elevate their mood.

Third, some patients who are unstable in their moods tend to be less cautious when it comes to relationships as they do not think of long term consequences. For instance, they may not practice safe sex and that will make them more prone to having sexually transmitted diseases and unwanted pregnancy.

Some studies are claiming that exposure to semen may improve a woman's mood [2]. However, many of these studies are not well designed and the results are inconclusive. Having intimacy is a strong indicator of the quality of the relationship between the couple and the kind of emotional support that the individual gets [3]. Good relationships and strong emotional support can help in the recovery process from a bout of depression.

Do remember to engage in safe sex and take steps to enhance your relationships with others.

Great to hear that you have taken the first step in seeking help :) Here are some points that address your questions. 1. You can get a referral letter to see a psychiatrist from either a private GP, or the polyclinic. 2. Getting a referral letter from the polyclinic is the only way to get subsidised fees when seeing a psychiatrist within the goverment hospital. 3. Since you prefer to see a private psychiatrist, getting a referral letter from either a private GP or the polyclinic is fine.

How to deal with chronic depression and dysthymia?

Thank you for asking such an interesting question and sharing your difficult life situation. It is heartwarming to learn that you are determined to get well by becoming a student in psychology. I hope you enjoy pursuing the subject and understanding more about your own psyche. From your brief account, it looks like what you have at the age of 15 was 'double depression', that is a major depressive episode superimposed on a long standing, low grade depression of at least 2 years' duration.
