Should I be concerned about a bump on my waterline for 1 week?

Doctor's Answer

The bumps on the waterline or lid margin are often due to a condition known as styes. Basically, they are oil glands in the eyelid that occasionally become blocked, and then form into a lump.

Often times they are not painful, but occasionally styes may become infected. Infected styes can be painful and inflamed in appearance which need to be treated with antibiotics.

Styes may be treated with warm compression by way of a towel soaked in warm water applied to the eyelid invloved.

In cases that are not amenable to conservative treatment, a minor eyelid procedure may be performed by an ophthalmologist to remove the stye.
