Which sunscreen is best suited for post laser skin resurfacing?

Doctor's Answers 1

Hi there,

Sunscreens that are best suited for post laser resurfacing are those that fulfill the following 3 main criteria:

1) SPF 30 and above (adequately protects against UVB which causes redness and sunburns)

2) PA +++ (adequately protects against UVA which causes pigmentation

3) Minimally irritating as the skin after laser resurfacing tends to be sensitive; pure physical sunscreens may be less irritating compared to chemical sunscreens.

Many international sunscreen brands will have a product that fulfills these 3 main criteria. Hope this helps you find the right sunscreen to use after your skin resurfacing!

Is SPF 30 for sunscreen sufficient in Singapore? How often do I need to reapply?

thanks for your question. 1. SPF 30 and above is generally sufficient, but only if you apply enough of it. It would require a small tea spoon amount of SPF 30 sunblock for the whole face. Therefore, I would recommend applying SPF 50 or more, so that you get the minimum amount of protection for lesser quantities of sunscreen applied. 2. Sunscreen lasts only 4 hours. If you will be re-exposed to strong sunlight more than 4 hours after initial sunblock application, you should ideally reapply your sunscreen. 3.

What are good recommended sunscreens in Singapore for UVA and UVB protection?

Hi Elaine! You should look out for products with SPF 50 and PA +++. The SPF is a relative measure of sun protection that the sunscreen provides against UVB. For example, if you normally take 20 minutes under direct sunlight to burn, SPF 50 sunblock will multiply that time by 50 for you to 1000 minutes. The number of +'s behind the PA rating determines the amount of protection against UVA. UVA protection is important to prevent pigmentation and photo-aging of the skin. There are some additional considerations you may want to make before choosing your ideal sunscreen.
