What are the symptoms of Athlete’s foot (tinea pedis) and ringworm (tinea corporis)? (photo)

Doctor's Answers 1

Athlete's foot (tinea pedis) is a fungal infection affecting the feet and tinea corporis is a fungal infection affecting the body and limbs.

Tinea or fungal infections often present with rashes that are ring-shaped and scaly. The rash is usually itchy. Less commonly, the area may have small blisters or tiny pustules.

Areas which are more prone to sweat and moisture like the feet and groin areas are more commonly affected and fungal infections are more prone in individuals who perspire a lot.

Sometimes, feet eczema can also present with itchy and scaly rashes. Fungal infections and feet eczema can also co-exist. A fungal scrape, where the skin scraping is sent for microscopic examination, can be ordered to confirm the diagnosis of a fungal infection if there is any doubt.

What are ways to treat cystic acne when Benzoyl peroxide and Doxycycline did not manage to alleviate the condition? (photo)

Thank you for your question. If cystic acne is not responding to oral antibiotics and topical benzoyl peroxide, oral isotretinoin is a good option as this is a very effective treatment for cystic acne. Intralesional steroid injection is a good option to consider too for cystic acne. It helps to quickly reduce the inflammation and size of the cysts. This treatment can be used together with oral antibiotics or isotretinoin which help to prevent new cysts from developing.
