Cysteine belongs to a group of substances known as amino acids, which serve as building blocks of protein and muscles. This amino acid is commonly found in food rich in protein and is safe for consumption and does not harm the liver.

There are different derivatives or "versions" of cysteine based on the changes to the side branch attached to the main molecule. One important antioxidant in our body known as glutathione is synthesized from cysteine.

Another version with an acetyl group attached to (otherwise known as NAC) is commonly used as a mucolytic to breakdown thick phlegm in patients with cough or asthma. In fact, it also serves as the main antidote to Panadol (paracetamol) overdose with liver injury when given in an intravenous form.

For long standing cystic acne, what are my treatment options if even Accutane (Isotretinoin) fails to result in any improvement?

Hi, It is highly unlikely that isotretinoin will fail to result in any improvement in cystic acne if adequate dosing is used. A higher dose of 0. 5-1mg/kg/day may be needed to suppress more recalcitrant cystic acne. Sometimes it may take up to 6 months before the inflammatory acne can be fully controlled. At the same time, complications of gram-negative folliculitis requiring the use of appropriate oral antibiotics need to considered. Adjuvant treatment such as intralesional steroids and hormonal therapy (in females) may give additional benefits.

What tests are required to diagnose oral HPV and how do I treat it?

I suppose we can do a swab test to find out. We take a swab and send it to the lab where they run through a machine to look for the virus.
