How can TCM help with stomach flu symptoms such as diarrhea and nausea?

Doctor's Answers 1

There are many traditional Chinese medicine herbal formulas that can help to resolve these issues. For example, Huo Xiang Zheng Qi (藿香正气) and Li Zhong Tang (理中 汤) are both effective TCM herbal formulas for treating diarrhoea and nausea.

Acupuncture can also help alleviate these symptoms various combinations of the below acupuncture points like 中脘 (RN 12), 足三里 (ST 36), 天枢 (ST 25), 上巨虚 (ST 37), 关元 (RN4),阴陵泉(SP9) and 内关(PC 6) to treat stomach flu symptoms such as diarrhoea and nausea.

How to distinguish between stomach flu or food poisoning?

Both gastric flu can and food poisoning may present with similar symptoms and difficult to differentiate although the former tends to present more with fever, nausea and vomiting while the latter is associated with ingestion of contaminated food that cause cramps and diarrhoea most times. As far as treatment is concerned, adequate hydration is the most important aspect besides controlling symptoms. In some cases, a course of antibiotics may be required for suspected bacteria infection especially if the fever is associated with blood stain stools.

What could be the cause of persistent phlegm without cough or flu symptoms, and how can it be treated?

The source of phlegm can be from conditions from the nose, lungs and stomach. Common causes include: 1. Nose & sinuses - Common cold, Allergic Rhinitis (sensitive nose), Sinusitis (sinus infection) etc 2. Lungs - bronchitis (inflammation of the lungs), pneumonia (infection of the lungs), smoker's lungs etc 3. Stomach - acid reflux from the stomach 4. Dehydration One of the most common reason for phlegm in the throat that I see in my practice is postnasal drip (mucous flowing down from the back of the nose down to the throat).
