The tests for GI parasites include microscopic inspection of stool specimens or tissue samples. The stool specimen method can easily be done at any GP clinic and your family doctor will be able to advise you further on how to get a representative sample from your stool.

The tissue method usually involves an endoscopy examination either through your mouth or through your bottom and they are done as part of the work-up process of your digestive tract problem. To do this, you will need to engage a digestive specialist.

The cost for a simple stool test is low in most centres and should be around $50 or so. The cost of endoscopy ranges from approximately $800-2500 and depends largely on the examination approach and the findings.

How do I prepare for a gastrointestinal endoscopy?

Depending on the type of endoscopy you plan to have, the preparations can be merely a 6 to 8 hour fasting to drinking 2 to 3 litres of bowel prep fluid overnight. In general, most doctors have their own advice on how to prepare you for the endoscopy process. Please follow their advice closely so that you will get the best outcome from your endoscopy. One simple tip that I provide my own patients for colonoscopy is to chill their bowel prep solution in the fridge after preparing. A few drops of lime juice may go a long way in making the drink more palatable.

Why do dentists give differing views on whether I need to extract my wisdom teeth, and does it mean that one of them is wrong?

Singapore does not have national guidelines that dentists must follow when making a decision to remove wisdom teeth. Dentists make clinical recommendations based on their judgment, which is affected by: Experience Recent (the last 6-10) cases that they have encountered Previous adverse outcomes: they may have seen a patient with a severe infection or decay caused by a wisdom tooth that should have been removed earlier to prevent these issues. Training: different dental schools have different philosophies when it comes to indications for removing wisdom teeth.
