Under what circumstances can an STI be transmitted without sexual intercourse?

Doctor's Answers 1

Some STIs or sexually transmitted infections can be transmitted even without penetration or sexual intercourse.

Infections like genital warts, genital herpes, syphilis and molluscum contagiosum can spread by direct contact with the affected skin. If there is skin to skin contact with the affected skin, you can acquire these infections. You can also catch pubic lice through skin to skin contact without penetration or sexual intercourse.

Unprotected oral sex can also transmit infections like viral warts, genital herpes and gonorrhoea. Even HIV can spread through unprotected oral sex, although the risk is lower than vaginal intercourse.

It is important to minimize the spread of STIs by avoiding sexual contact with high risk individuals, and minimize the number or sexual partners, and always use protection such as condoms.

Why do I experience bleeding after sex with no pain or discomfort?

It’s best to see your gynaecologist for a check. Common causes for bleeding after intercourse include small abrasions or lacerations, cervical polyps, or abnormal changes in the cervix (pap smear abnormalities).

Is a smelly white discharge after my periods a sign of an STI or fungal infection?

The best advice I can give is actually to go for a check. There are reliable tests to check for infections such as chlamydia, gonorrhea, and other possible STIs. While a white discharge is often associated with a fungal/ yeast infection, which sometimes flare up with the menses, there can be a concurrent bacterial infection which may or may not be sexually transmitted. Some of these STIs in women can be silent, yet can have important sequelae.
