What are good recommended sunscreens in Singapore for UVA and UVB protection?

Doctor's Answer

Hi Elaine!

You should look out for products with SPF 50 and PA +++.

The SPF is a relative measure of sun protection that the sunscreen provides against UVB. For example, if you normally take 20 minutes under direct sunlight to burn, SPF 50 sunblock will multiply that time by 50 for you to 1000 minutes.

The number of +'s behind the PA rating determines the amount of protection against UVA. UVA protection is important to prevent pigmentation and photo-aging of the skin.

There are some additional considerations you may want to make before choosing your ideal sunscreen. For example, whether they are chemical or physical blockers, whether they have antioxidant properties like Vitamin C/E or PLE, or if they are comedogenic or not.

Hope this helps you make your decision!

Regards,

Dr Harvey Ho
