What are possible causes for dryness and white patches on skin? (photo)

Doctor's Answers 1

Hi,

From the photos, your skin appears dry, irritated and inflamed. You may have eczema or superficial skin inflammation. The cause may be due to internal sensitivity (e.g. atopic dermatitis) or due to external factors.

An external factor causing eczema is called contact dermatitis and needs to be carefully excluded by a detailed history of what you may have applied to the affected area.

Contact dermatitis may be further divided into irritant e.g. use of harsh soaps, powders or allergic e.g. fragrances, preservatives, anti-fungals. A patch test performed by a dermatologist may be required to help identify the contact allergen.

Hope you get well soon!

There is significantly uneven skin tone. I would probably advise to do exfoliation. A mix of Chemical peels and topical products for gentle peels would help with the skin tone. Some lasers or light IPL will also help to reduce the discolouration. That should do the trick!

Does facial laser treatment trigger psoriasis?

Thanks for the question. If you have a diagnosis of psoriasis, there is a possibility that certain treatments can aggravate it. With psoriasis, damage or injury to the skin can cause psoriasis to develop at the site of the injury. This is know as the Koebner phenomenon. Therefore, you do have to take care that the treatment is gentle and does not cause any trauma or damage to the skin. Likewise, for eczema, the skin is sensitive and more prone to external insults, so you should avoid treatment if the facial skin is still red or irritated as this can be more easily aggravate by treatment.
