What are safe and common treatments for suspected bites and stings by unidentified insects? (Photo)

Doctor's Answers 1

Hi,

From the photo, while you may indeed have insect bite reactions, other possibilities may include papular eczema.

For acute insect bite reactions, a topical steroid used over the short term is safe and will help reduce the itch quickly. Oral antihistamines will help as well. There is probably no need for oral or injection steroids. Prevention of future bites is important to minimize relapse of the condition.

For papular eczema, a mild cleanser and moisturizer used together with the topical steroid will help repair the skin barrier function and reduce the associated skin inflammation and itch.

Hope this helps!

How can I prevent or minimise scarring after an insect bite?

In general, after an insect bite, it is important to minimize picking and scratching at the rash as this can aggravate the swelling and increase the risk of scarring. It is also important to prevent infection and keep the area clean. Topical antibiotics may be helpful especially of there is a wound and overlying redness. Some people may develop an exaggerated insect bite reaction and the area of the bite can become very inflamed. Topical steroids can help reduce the inflammation. For the current scar, this should usually get better with time. Silicone based scar gels may help in the healing.

What are alternatives to hydrocortisone cream for a mosquito bite? (photo)

Hi,If the local reaction to the mosquito bite isn’t too serious, then one just needs to relieve the itch until the swelling subsides. Non-prescription creams containing menthol offers quick itch relief - the good old “Mopiko ointment” works great. If the local reaction is more intense, then a topical steroid cream will help reduce the swelling faster. Hydrocortisone cream is the mildest topical steroid that is available from the pharmacy without a prescription. Stronger steroid creams will require a prescription and will be more effective than hydrocortisone cream.
