What are some TCM herbs to improve overall health for someone with low blood pressure?

Doctor's Answers 3

Thank you for your enquiry. As a general rule of thumb, herbs are medications too, so I do not advocate self medicate.

If it's a concerning issue, I would recommend that you see a registered TCM practitioner for an assessment.

The reason being low blood pressure may just be an presentation of an internal imbalance which a TCM practitioner seeks to find out, or he/she may need to rule out other medical conditions too.

When the cause is determined, then will a TCM practitioner be able to formulate a treatment plan specially for you, which commonly consist of herbal prescription and/or acupuncture.

That being said, people with low blood pressure are often found to be deficient in Qi and/or Blood. Thus, a practitioner may prescribe qi-nourishing herbs such as codonopsis, astragalus or blood-rejuvenating herbs such as chinese angelica root. Alternatively, invigorating acupoints such as Bai Hui (百会穴), Zu San Li (足三里) may be selected during acupuncture.

I hope it helps!

Low blood pressure is often associated with “Qi” and blood deficiency of the body. Without enough “Qi” and blood, the blood circulating in the blood vessels will be insufficient to maintain normal blood pressure.

Also, TCM theory believes that one of the functions of “Qi” is to help the blood in the body to circulate, especially the heart’s “Qi”, as the main function of the heart is to pump blood around our body. With “Qi” deficiency, blood circulation is less efficient, thus leading to low blood pressure.

TCM herbs such as Dang Shen (Codonopsis), Huang Qi (Astragalus Root), Bai Zhu (Atractylodes) can help to improve “Qi” deficiency while others like Dang Gui (Chinese Angelica), Chuan Xiong (Cnidium) and Shu Di (Rehmannia) can help to improve blood deficiency. To increase blood circulation, Dan Shen(Red Sage), Hong Hua(Safflower) and Tao Ren(Prunus persica) are often used.

However, as everyone’s constituency is different, low blood pressure may be due to other reason as well. One should seek consultation from a professional TCM physician to let him/her assess the patient’s condition before consuming the above mentioned TCM herbs.

Hi!

TCM physicians typically prescribe herbal formulations to regulate conditions as TCM herbs when combined, will work in tandem to support the different aspects of the prescription. A very common herbal food to take to improve blood circulation is 红枣, do ensure you are not allergic to the herb and have no clotting disorders.

It will definitely be much more useful to seek TCM consultation and obtain an individualised prescription that can address all your concerns and that which suits your body constitution.

Cheers
Victoria

Should I be worried if I am falling asleep suddenly during the daytime?

Thank you for your question. There can be many reasons why someone would experience excessive daytime sleepiness. As the potential causes are varied and have been well-covered by both Dr Tze Yong and Dr Ethan, I shall not be repetitious. One of the most common cause of excessive daytime sleepiness (if you do not have poor sleep habit, sleep deprivation, insomnia and medical problems or are on medications that disrupt sleep) is Obstructive Sleep Apnoea or OSA.

Can perlane fillers be seen on a CT scan?

Perlane fillers can be seen on CT scan as soft tissue at the location where it’s injected, especially if it’s injected as a bolus. Fret not, the radiologist and radiographer would have seen many such cases, so do not expect them to be surprised at the findings. In fact, you can let the doctor know this, so that the radiologist doesn’t mistake it as other structures in his interpretation of the scan.
