What are the future prospects of dentists in Singapore? Do you think there will be too many dentists?

Hi,

1. Unable to comment on prospects per se. Yes but the general consensus on the ground is – the govt wants to keep costs low, so are flooding with foreign dentists. Don’t think that’s going to change anytime soon.

So you’ll probably have to work harder and longer in the future if this keeps up, for less. That’s my guess anyhow.

2. Can’t say for sure – but generally I’d also think that putting one of them second will certainly affect your chances of whatever you put as second choice.

Hello Megan,

I will now attempt to answer your questions.

1. Dentists in Singapore still have a bright future. Even if there are too many dentists in Singapore in the future, you can still make a very decent living by making sure that you are highly skilled, compassionate and good with people. Patients will always be looking for great dentists no matter what the dentist- population ratio is.

2. That maybe logical thinking , but from what i know, this is not necessarily the case. The National University of Singapore wants to make sure that there is a even spread of top students amongst all the popular faculties. The university administrators do not want all the top students to cluster into medicine or dentistry or law or engineering. There must be a good mix to ensure that there is talent in all faculties. So if you are rejected by the faculty of dentistry, it doesnt mean you will be automatically rejected by the faculty of medicine.

I wish you all the best in your university applications and you are welcome to pop by to Elite Dental Group for an internship!
