What are the side effects of taking Norethisterone for the long term?

Doctor's Answers 1

Norethisterone isn’t really a drug that is meant for Long term use. More common uses for norethisterone is for example in dysfunctional uterine bleeding, delaying of periods and for endometrial protection when on estrogens. However common side effects include bloating and mood swings.

There are better alternatives if it is required for medium to Long term use eg the levonorgestrel releasing iucd (Mirena) or the oral contraceptive pill. Please discuss this with your gynae.

Do GPs prescribe Norethisterone in Singapore?

Norethisterone is typically prescribed by a practitioner (GP or gynaecologist) to: Delay menses (especially if there is a holiday or important event coming up). It is typically prescribed at least 2days earlier than the expected date of menses (caveat: the individual has to have regular menstrual cycles and track when is the next one expected to come) until the end of the holiday, or important event so that menses will only come after that. Induce menses when an individual expected her menses to come but it was delay. (caveat: pregnancy must be excluded).
