What can I do to help an injured deltoid heal more quickly?

Doctor's Answer

The shoulder is quite a complex area and while the pain might feel around the deltoid area, it is quite possible that you have inured your rotator cuff muscles/tendons. Without a clinical assessment, it can be difficult to determine where your pain is coming from. Depending on your assessment, you might need an X-Ray or ultrasound examination to look into the problem further.

In terms of treatment, it might be through rehabilitation exercises, such as rotator cuff strengthening or working on your range of movement, or guided injections. Sometimes, if symptoms are not improving you may need further imaging and a surgical intervention.

To optimise treatment, eating sensibly and limiting risk factors such as smoking will help. I’m not sure if you asked the question about smoking, but certainly this can inhibit tissue healing.

I would suggest seeing a sports/MSK physician in the first instance and they can start your treatment process.

Many thanks
