What causes toenail discolouration and how is it treated?

Doctor's Answers 1

Thank you for the question. Do consult a dermatologist to have your nails assessed as discolouration can be due to different possible causes.

Commonly, it may be discoloured and rough due to trauma from tight shoes or ill fitting footwear. It may also be discoloured due to ongoing or previous fungal or bacterial infections.

In some cases, serious skin cancers such as nail melanoma can also present as discolouration of the nail. It is therefore most important to get a definitive diagnosis and further investigations and treatment can be performed based on the diagnosis. I hope this helps!
