The monthly period pattern is maintain by network of regulating hormones between the brain, the ovaries and the uterus. Disturbance to the hormonal axes may tweak the timing of the periods, the pattern of bleeding and the flow of the content.
If it occurs once in a while, it is considered a harmless disrupted state, and will probably resolved by itself. If it happens repeatedly, then a visit to the gyne will be appropriate.
Hi there. Based on your description, you may be having a vaginal yeast infection. I do not think getting medications over the counter is a good idea. The best thing to do is to see a doctor to get a proper assessment and treatment. If you are having a vaginal yeast infection, simple medication would cure the problem and your symptoms will disappear within 1-2 days after medication.
It may be helpful if we explore some of the causes for this intermittent bleeding - sometimes termed as "breakthrough bleeding". If the pill is not taken on a daily/regular basis, the temporary drop in the level of hormones can lead to intermittent bleeding. If you are on any long term medication (eg some antibiotics or anti-epilepsy medication) that increases hormonal metabolism/ breakdown, this can lead to a lowered level of the contraceptive hormone and this can also lead to bleeding.
