What could be the cause of right lower abdominal pain?

Doctor's Answers 1

There are many causes of lower abdominal pain which can range from benign and easily treated conditions, to more serious and potentially fatal diagnoses. From a gastrointestinal viewpoint, examples of the former include irritable bowel syndrome, while more dangerous causes include acute appendicitis, inflammatory bowel disease or bowel obstruction.

From your brief description of symptoms and its association with urinary frequency and backache, the cause of your pain may also originate from the urinary tract instead of the gastrointestinal tract. One possibility is renal stones, although the pain experienced is usually quite severe. If you are female, pelvic pathology such as ovarian cysts may also give rise to right lower abdominal pain.

I would suggest seeking a formal consultation with a GP, Gastroenterologist or Urologist, where a more detailed history will be sought from you.

Together with some basic investigations, I am sure a definitive diagnosis will be reached.

Hope you feel better soon!

The symptoms that you have described sound like colic which commonly originates from the bowels. Common causes include constipation and irritable bowel syndrome. However, the symptoms could also originate from your gynaecological organs or your urinary system. A more detail history and examination is required to correlate your complaints with other related symptoms. Please see your regular doctor for a more detailed discussion. Take care.

What should I do next if I suspect that I have IBS symptoms?

Your symptoms are very common and many people suffer from them daily. However, there are a couple of things that I would like to bring up in your case that are worth considering as I suspect your complaints might not be from a single problem. Irritable bowel syndrome encompasses a myriad of symptoms but a common feature would be the relation of the abdominal pain or discomfort to defecation. Most people find relief with passing motion or gas, albeit temporary. Your complaints of prolonged, persistent abdominal bloating warrants further consideration of other medical and non-medical causes.
