What is the best way to remove lip pigmentation?

Doctor's Answers 1

Hello! Any new dark patches on the lips or skin should be examined by a dermatologist to determine if it is suspicious and requires further testing.

A common cause of lower lip pigmentation would be a harmless condition known as labial melanotic macule.

This is essentially a harmless freckle affecting the lip. Occasionally, these can be associated with other serious syndromes so a quick consultation is advised.

These pigmented patches are easily removed using a pigment laser. It often lightens rapidly after just 1-2 treatments. Hope this helps!

Warm regards

What treatment is there for a red and itchy lipline?

Thanks for the details. Your story sounds typical of eczematous cheilitis, which is inflammation of the lips/surrounding area. It sounds like you’ve already been doing the right things (probably based on advise from your doctor). This includes not licking your lips and applying make-up sparingly, both of which can aggravate your condition and prevent recovery. He has probably given you a mild topical steroid cream, and encouraged you to use moisturizers, all of which are also the correct treatment. You should avoid scratching too as this will make the problem worse.

What is the difference between different types of fillers?

There are many different brands of fillers , but the main difference is that one group ( Hyaluronic Acid ) provides an immediate filling effect but does not stimulate significant amounts of collagen , whereas the other group known as Collagen Stimulators ( Radiesse, Sculptra, Ellanse) stimulates your skin to produce large amounts of collagen. For your lips, it’s best to use Hyaluronic Acid as it’s not suitable to use collagen-stimulators here. 1cc of Hyaluronic Acid can cost between $500-1200 depending on the brand and the doctor’s reputation.
