What is the cause and treatment for vaginal and anal itching?

Doctor's Answers 2

May I ask if are there any concomitant vaginal discharge or bowel symptoms? The complaint of just isolated itch alone is a little unusual, especially if there are no skin changes.

In essence you would need it to be looked at by a doctor, and two main conditions excluded – either pinworms or lichen sclerosus.

If both are ruled out by the doctor, then you might want to consider perhaps a short course of topical corticosteroids eg mometasone cream.

The common causes of itch around the anus and vulval area include eczema and candida or fungal infection.

The itch around the anal area is often aggravated by persistent scratching, so you should try to refrain from scratching if possible. Using gentle soap free cleansers will also minimize the irritation.

For eczema, topical steroids are helpful. But for candida or fungal infections, they should not be used and an antifungal cream like miconazole cream can be used instead.

There are other causes for the itch as Dr Jasmine has mentioned and I agree that it is best to see your doctor to get the right diagnosis and treatment.

Do I need a colonoscopy for tailbone and anal pain to rule out cancer?

Hi, The description of your symptoms appear to be proctalgia ani. While it literally translate to "pain in your anus", the persistence of your symptoms warrants a physical examination by a doctor. The causes can range anywhere from an anal fissure (tear in your anus), to deep anal infections, to referred pain from somewhere else e. g. coccydynia / pelvic floor strain (from your weight lifting), and stress.

Is being tested positive for Streptococcus B in my vagina a concern?

Hi M2 – it’s unlikely that the culprit for painful sex in your situation is Streptococcus B – the PAP smear result was just an incidental pick-up. It’s actually a commonly found bacteria in women, found in the vagina of up to 1 in 4 women (and causing no symptoms whatsoever in most). Strep B in the vagina is more relevant when a woman is pregnant, in which case it has to be eradicated to prevent dangerous infections to the baby. My money would be on the recent yeast infection as the cause of your itchiness and feeling of rawness with sex.
