What is the cost of corticosteroid injection for cystic acne in Singapore? Is it effective?

Doctor's Answers 2

I will have to agree with my colleague here and I think he has covered the questions quite comprehensively.

Personally, it is the risk of future scarring from prolonged, severe and deep seated inflammation from cystic acne that makes arresting and treating cystic acne quickly important.

In such an instance, steroid injections would definitely be one of my first line treatment options.

All the best!

Corticosteroid injections for cystic acne in Singapore costs about $50 – $200.

Cystic acne happens when the infection that causes acne goes deep into your skin, creating a large, inflamed, tender pimple that’s full of pus. These deep lesions are more likely to scar.

Steroid injections work by reducing the inflammatory reaction, and can potentially reduce the amount of damage/scarring caused by a large cystic acne.

Corticosteroid injections take about 4 – 8 hours to start shrinking the cystic acne. Pain will improve too. You’ll usually see the acne become flattened and less red within 24 hours.

Would you recommend a corticosteroid injection for cystic acne?

Let your doctor advise you on whether your cystic acne is appropriate to be injected, as there’s a small risk of skin depression/skin atrophy post injection, which usually resolves with time.

Will the acne return after the injection?

Yes, a corticosteroid injection treats only the pimple, but does not prevent acne from recurring at the same spot, or in other spots.

Cheers

Are there any side effects to regular Kenalog Shots for acne?

I agree with the answers by Dr Winston and Dr Israr. Intralesional injections are mainly recommended for acne cyst. As previously mentioned, frequent steroid injections can caused skin thinning and atrophy and if this happens it may be irreversible! There are many other effective treatments to get the acne under control like oral antibiotics and isotretinoin. So speak to your dermatologist and tell her your concerns and discuss if these other options are suitable for you.

Should I see a skin doctor for cystic acne on my cheek, or can I use OTC products?

Cystic acne happens when an infection/inflammatory process goes deep into your skin. If a cyst bursts, the infection can spread, causing more breakouts. By definition, cystic acne tends to scar. Hence if your cystic acne looks very red, angry and inflamed like that 2 big zits on the chin: It’s best to nip it in the bud early by seeing a dermatologist/doctor for effective treatment.
