What is the difference between Emsculpt and Coolsculpt fat freezing for removing fat?

Doctor's Answers 2

Both Emsculpting and Coolsculpting are non-invasive body shaping therapies for people who are looking for therapies to help improve their body contours and are not meant for weight loss. They work differently and target different groups of people.

Coolsculpting works via the principle of Cryolipolysis. By delivering precise and controlled cooling to the targeted fat cells under the skin, the fat cells get frozen and crystallised, and subsequently undergo apoptosis/cell death. Over time, these fat cells are eliminated by your body and this results in a more sculpted contour over the treated area. It is a form of body contouring treatment that is suitable for people who have unwanted or stubborn fat in targeted areas and suitable candidates for fat-freeze/cryolipolysis treatment are those with noticeable bulges in certain areas that they wish to improve but want a non-surgical alternative to liposuction.

Emsculpt uses High-Intensity Focused Electromagnetic technology to induce supramaximal muscle contractions which are not achievable through voluntary contractions. Through this, muscle tissue is forced to adapt to such extreme conditions and responds with a deep remodelling of its inner structure that results in muscle buidling and body sculpting. This is more suitable for those who do not have excess fat tissue and are just looking to improve the tone and shape of his/her abdomen and buttocks through muscle building.

Hi, Coolsculpting is the original fat-freezing technology from the USA, which is essentially freezing fat cells at negative temperatures to create fat cell death. The surrounding nerves, blood vessels, and organs are not affected at all. Around 20% of the treated fat will be removed over the next 3 months after treatment.

Emsculpt is using High-Intensity Focused ElectroMagnetic energy (HIFEM) to burn fat by building stronger muscles. It causes the abdominal muscles to contract with a force that is so strong that couldn’t be achieved by yourself doing sit-ups.

Therefore it sort of cheats your muscles via HIFEM technology to create the effect of more than 20,000 contractions in 30 minutes. For this treatment, there is a fat burning effect on top of the muscle building effect at the same time. It is only approved for the abdomen and buttocks currently.

How effective is fractional Co2 laser vs Infini RF for acne scars?

Good questions! I agree with Dr Chua’s reply on the pros and cons of Fractional CO2 lasers versus Infini RF. In addition, I would like to address your question on the ideal length of time between subcision and Infini RF treatments. The ideal interval between treatments is 4-6 weeks. This is to allow for adequate skin recovery. Hope that this answers your questions!

Is PRP injection available for acne scarring in Singapore?

PRP at the present moment is not available in Singapore. It does help with acne scarring though, and you might have to go to neighbouring countries to do the treatment (including Malaysia). Having said that, you can consider Rejuran/skin boosters/microneedling that can help in a similar fashion. Your 2nd question on which is better — it depends on the severity and type of scars. But usually Fractional laser is the backbone of laser therapy. So consult your doctor early to discuss the available options.
