What is the most effective treatment for cervical cancer?

Doctor's Answers 1

For cervical cancer, it depends on the stage of cancer. In the early stages, surgery is enough to cure the patient.

As mentioned earlier, if the tumours are very small, microscopic, we can do something called a cone biopsy.

If the tumour is bigger, more than 2cm, we can do a hysterectomy or a trachelectomy if the patient is young.

But for stage 2 onwards, it gets more difficult, as the tumour may not be in one area anymore, it can be spread out and the patient will need chemoradiation.

And for stage 4, when cancer has affected other organs, it can be palliative already, there is going to be chemotherapy and nowadays, we try a new thing called immunotherapy as well.

How do I know if I am still eligible to take HPV vaccination and how long does it last for?

HPV vaccination (Gardasil 9 and Cervarix) is officially certified to be given to girls and ladies between 9-26 years old in Singapore so seeing that you are 22 years old, you are definitely eligible to be vaccinated. In other countries (like Europe, Canada, Australia for example), the age limit is up to 45 years old so even if you are beyond 26 years old in Singapore, it is still safe and effective to be vaccinated.

Can certain dietary intake, such as omega-3 fatty acids, increase the risk of prostate cancer?

It is quite clear that diet does play a role in the development of prostate cancer. Japanese men have 3x less prostate cancer than men born in the United States. However, the sons of Japanese immigrants to the United States have a higher rate of prostate cancer that approaches that of Caucasians born in the United States. Much of this increase in prostate cancer is likely from the adoption of the “Western” diet and lifestyle [1]. This is further supported by a recent analysis of the available evidence based on population studies.
