What is the typical procedures involved for medical abortions in Singapore?

Doctor's Answers 1

Sorry to hear about your situation. You may wish to check out this post about abortion in Singapore, which has already comprehensively covered details about the whole process, as well as the approximate costs of getting an abortion. These costs include:

  • Doctor consultation and follow-ups
  • Medications
  • Ultrasound scans

The age of your pregnancy is the most important determining factor in how much your abortion will cost. Aborting an advanced pregnancy is much more complex, and hence more expensive.

Other factors which may affect costs include:

  • Method of abortion
  • Anaesthetist fee (if required for sedation or general anaesthesia)
  • Pre-existing medical conditions

You can also obtain a referral from a polyclinic to get an abortion at a public hospital as a subsidised patient.

The wait time to get an appointment at a public hospital can range from 1 to 2 weeks, and will cost you about $750 - $3000 in total, depending on your gestation.

Medical abortions are primarily used for pregnancies of less than 8 weeks, beyond which using this method may end up with more complications. You can choose to take the abortion pill by mouth, or have it placed in your vagina. Taking it orally typically has more side effects.

Contractions will start within 4 - 6 hours of taking the medication. These contractions cause heavy bleeding, severe cramps and the loss of the pregnancy. Other common side effects include nausea, vomiting and weakness.

Rest assured that in Singapore, as long as you are above 16 years old, NO ONE ELSE will be informed about your pregnancy and abortion due to medical confidentiality.

I hope that this helps to assuage your concerns!

Is there any difference in doctors with FAMS qualification when it comes to treating severe acne?

Great question. Some of my answers below will be factual, and some will be personal opinions. Sorry for the verbose answer, as I hope that it will help other readers too. Fact: All doctors with FAMS are specialists, but not all specialists have FAMS. You need to first be a specialist, before applying to be a Fellow of the Academy of Medicine. Think of it like an exclusive members club, for specialists in Singapore. It is not a board certification, as they would have completed their “board specialty exams” by then.

Why are mesolipo injections not allowed in Singapore?

Actually PPC and DC (the medicine inside mesolipo injections) are well studied in medical literature. However, the dosage and protocols are not fixed. Also, I heard from one of my mentors that many medical companies started producing substandard quality mesolipo drugs which may not have the needed concentration for effective results. So MOH decided to do a blanket ban on it just to protect the patients from possibly ineffective brands. Nobody really knows the real reason, the truth is still out there!
