What should I do next after getting positive results from a pregnancy test kit?

Doctor's Answers 1

First and foremost, congratulations in being pregnant! It is advisable for you to seek a detailed consultation with your gynaecologist who can then confirm that you are indeed pregnant and also the gestation of your pregnancy. This can be done via a urine pregnancy test, pregnancy hormone blood test (BHCG) and an ultrasound scan. The ultrasound scan is used to confirm the presence of one or more gestation sacs / pregnancy sacs (as multiple pregnancies are possible) in the womb and also the presence or absence of a fetal pole and fetal heart. More importantly the ultrasound scan is very useful in excluding ectopic pregnancies (pregnancy in the Fallopian tube) which can be potentially life threatening if missed.

How accurate is a pregnancy test in determining pregnancy?

For a young lady with a history of irregular menses, we will always consider polycystic ovaries as a possible cause. Other possible causes include severe stress, hormonal disorders such as thyroid problems, prolactin producing tumours (prolactin is a hormone necessary for production of breast milk), sudden weight fluctuations, vigorous intensity of exercise, or even a deficient production of the female hormones. Of course, in someone who is sexually active, it is important to exclude pregnancy. The urine pregnancy tests kits are quite sensitive and hence the result is reliable enough.
