Vomiting due to simple infection or food poisoning is usually self-limiting. Persistent vomiting, on the other hand, requires medical attention for assessment and to prevent dehydration. The sensation of hunger is physiological and can be generally accepted to signify a normal functioning digestive system.

Poor appetite may be due to any illness which affects the digestive function. If the problem is transient in nature, normal appetite will return quickly. Persistent appetite loss, especially with significant weight loss, will need early attention. This need not be associated with vomiting although the presence of additional vomiting will make a stronger case for immediate attention.

How accurate is a pregnancy test in determining pregnancy?

For a young lady with a history of irregular menses, we will always consider polycystic ovaries as a possible cause. Other possible causes include severe stress, hormonal disorders such as thyroid problems, prolactin producing tumours (prolactin is a hormone necessary for production of breast milk), sudden weight fluctuations, vigorous intensity of exercise, or even a deficient production of the female hormones. Of course, in someone who is sexually active, it is important to exclude pregnancy. The urine pregnancy tests kits are quite sensitive and hence the result is reliable enough.

How is vertigo diagnosed and treated in Singapore?

I hope you are well now - giddiness can be very debilitating and dramatically affects one's daily functioning due to their unpredictability. If your giddiness had been a sensation of the room spinning, that would be vertigo. If the giddiness worsened with changes of position, the most common cause would be benign positional paroxysmal vertigo (BPPV). However, giddiness is actually a very complex symptom which can be caused by many different system disorders in our body. The giddiness symptom is not very specific, and people describe it in different ways and experience it differently.
