What TCM treatments are available for gastric problems causing bloating and stomach discomfort?

Doctor's Answers 1

From the TCM point of view, gastric problems are closely related to the function of spleen and stomach. These two organs are responsible for the transformation and transportation of the food that we consume. When the spleen and stomach is weakened, it can lead to many digestive issues such as bloated, diarrhoea, constipation, stomach-ache, ingestion etc.

In TCM, the most common treatment for these internal problems would be herbal medicine. Herbal medicines are prescribed according to each patient's body constitution. The TCM physician will first understand your condition, and after looking at your tongue and taking your pulse, he/she will give a diagnosis for your condition.

The TCM medicines which mainly comprise of natural herbs, minerals and animal parts, will be prescribed according to your body constitution to help relieve your discomfort.

For gastric problems, the main aim of the treatment would be to strengthen your spleen and ease your stomach. Some physicians may administer acupuncture as an effective treatment method. The physician will also advice on appropriate lifestyle and diet change if required.

Why do I get indigestion after eating certain foods, and what should I do next?

The symptoms you describe sound like food intolerance. This is a condition due to the inability to digest and absorb certain food substances. The undigested food substances are metabolized by gut bacteria to produce gases, which in turn cause the symptoms of 'indigestion'. Studies show that dietary modification is the most effective way to improve symptoms. Medication is rarely helpful. The problem is that many patients are not able to identify what food substances they are intolerant to on their own. Further, as t people can become intolerant to foods that they could previously digest easily.

Why do I get stomach discomfort and gas after every meal?

Stomach discomfort after meal is a common complaint especially among people who consume larger portions of food in a relatively short time. Management for such discomfort may just be taking smaller portions each meal at a slower pace. At times, poor digestion due to upset intestinal rhythm, small bowel bacteria overgrowth or chronic constipation may also produce similar symptoms. Do watch for "red flag" signs of pain happening mostly at night, black stools, weight loss or pain which radiates to the sides or the back.
