Persistent pale stools may indicate a problem with secretion of bile juice into the digestive tract. Adult stool colour can range from different shades of brown to dark green. This is believed to be partly related to the diet we take but largely the effect of bile juice which is required for proper digestion.
If there is any issue with the flow of bile juice, our stool colour can appear abnormally pale to grayish regardless of the food we take. Do pay attention to the colour of your urine to see if it appears abnormally dark such as tea colour. Look into the mirror when you have a chance to see if the white portion of your eye is turning yellow. The above signs indicate an obstruction of the bile duct system which requires immediate attention and evaluation.
Common causes of bile duct obstruction include gallstones and tumour. Depending on the pattern of your liver function test, further tests including CT scan or MRI may be required. If stones are detected in the bile duct, you may require an endoscopic procedure known as ERCP to remove them. Surgery may also needed to clear any residual gallbladder stone if present.
