What UTIs are common in elderly patients and what are the symptoms?

Doctor's Answers 1

Many urinary tract infections (UTIs) are caused by E.Coli, which is a bacteria found in our stool and can enter the urinary system through the urethra. There are other types of bacteria, and sometimes fungi, which can also cause UTIs.

Symptoms

Symptoms of UTI include painful urination, increased urge to urinate, increased frequency of urination, feeling pressure in the lower abdomen/pelvis, cloudy smelly urine, blood in the urine, sensation of incomplete emptying of the bladder after urination, fever, pain in the lower abdomen/flank/back, nausea/vomiting, fatigue and even acute onset of confusion/behaviour changes.

How do I prevent recurring UTI?

Hi, Ms Breth While it is not uncommon for females to get UTIs, to get 3 UTIs per year may be of concern not to mention the discomfort that can be disruptive to your life. Recurrent UTIs in females especially if you have at least 2 episodes within 6 months warrant further evaluation with your doctor. Common causes of recurrent UTIs: 1) Hygiene - due to the proximity of the urethra and the rectum in females and also that the urethra in females are shorter, it is much easier for females to get UTI.
