As a patient, how will I know whether my wisdom tooth surgery is complex enough that it warrants an OMS surgeon versus a general dentist?

See your general dentist for an initial clinical and radiographic evaluation. Your dentist will decide if the case falls within the scope of difficulty that they are comfortable managing. Different dentists have different levels of experience with removing wisdom teeth surgically, so there is no single cutoff point across the board that will apply to all general dentists. It may be worthwhile having a specialist remove your tooth if there is a high risk of an oroantral perforation or if the roots of the wisdom tooth are in extremely close proximity to the inferior dental canal.

What are potential complications of a partially erupted wisdom tooth? (photo)

The most common complication would be food trapping. When the food gets built up, it can cause gum inflammation and tooth decay. It will cause more problems if the decay happens to affect other surrounding teeth. Eventually, it can cause collateral damage as once there is a hole in your wisdom tooth, the hole will only get increasingly bigger. Nothing is better than your own tooth. Fillings are not as good as your own tooth. But, it also depends on your oral hygiene. In fact, a bad filling can still do its job if you have perfect oral hygiene.
