When is a good age for children to get their braces done?

Doctor's Answers 2

There are normally two phases to treat children with crowded teeth.

The first phase is what we call the 'interceptive' phase where children are seen as young as 8-9 years old to determine if an expander is needed to expand the jaws and encourage teeth to erupt in a better position. Hopefully this may prevent any teeth extraction due to crowding later on. Some children may not need this phase and hence they can move directly into the second phase.

The second phase which is the 'definitive' phase is where fixed braces are used to correct malalignment of teeth and this can be done when the patient is in late mixed dentition ie: only a few baby teeth left. Normally for girls, this is about 10.5-11 years old.

Saying that, it is better to see an orthodontist at a younger age as you wouldn't want your daughter to 'miss the boat' as such.

Hope this helps. Good luck!

There is no one best time to start treatment with braces. The decision to start treatment is based on many factors like the nature of the problem, the stage of growth and the level of co-operation or motivation of the child to get treatment.

It is good practice to take your child for regular checkups and ask if a problem of crooked teeth is anticipated. A child can be examined at the ages of 7 years, 9 years and 12 years to check for problems related to the alignment of teeth and jaws.

Some problems like severe crowding (or lack of space for all the teeth), if detected early, can be treated by serial extraction from as early as seven years of age. In other cases, treatment may need to be done when all the baby teeth have been replaced by permanent teeth.

The timing of treatment depends on the nature of the problem . Here are some examples:

  • Irregular teeth can sometimes be due to missing or buried teeth. This needs to be identified early for optimum management.
  • When a child has difficulty putting the lips together, early myofunctional treatment – possibly even as young as 6 years — may help to promote growth to overcome this problem.
  • Disproportionate jaws, can be treated effectively if it is detected before puberty.

It is difficult for the layperson to know which cases are to be treated at which time, so it is best to come for regular checkups and so that treatment can be well-timed.

How do I know if my wisdom tooth needs to be extracted?

In terms of giving you any personable advice, I completely agree with Dr Shiming. It’s really hard for us to comment until we’ve done an examination for yourself. However, I thought I’d share with you some common reasons why wisdom teeth are extracted. If any apply to you or anyone else reading, then maybe you should consider to remove them. Pericoronitis. If the wisdom can’t erupt fully, there may be a flap of loose gum which lies over or around the erupted portion of the wisdom tooth. Food and bacteria can get stuck under this flap and cause a localised gum infection.

What is the cost of Mbrace for relapsed crooked teeth after previous braces treatment?

Thanks for your question! The cost of MBrace aligners will differ from clinic to clinic. Some clinics will tailor a cost according to your treatment plan, whereas others will have a package price. Usually if you’ve had braces in the past and your teeth have relapsed (moved out of alignment), it is relatively simple to rectify and so generally this will reflect positively on the cost of your treatment. For MBrace, your doctor will need to provide an examination to assess suitability and to take some baseline records.
