When is teeth bonding preferred to braces for closing gaps in teeth?

Doctor's Answer

Hi there,

It depends on some factors:

1) Size of your teeth compared with one another

If your teeth are proportionately sized in comparison to each other, I would advise braces or aligners to close the gaps. The lateral incisors (the teeth beside the front 2 teeth) are commonly undersized and conical shaped compared to the other teeth, building them up with some composite or bonding would help to close the spaces and enhance the aesthetics of your smile.

2) Location and size of the spaces between the teeth

If the spaces are too large and uneven, bonding the teeth would result in very large and unaesthetic looking teeth. Closing the spaces would be a better option.

3) Personal preference

Don't forget, the bonding on the teeth with composite can still come off if you bite on hard foods, and you may need to change them after a few years as these composite materials so change colour and stain with time.

4) Retention after braces

Spaces are notorious for opening up again after braces or aligner treatment is completed. Good wear of retainers or placement of a fixed retainer behind the front teeth will definitely help to maintain the spaces closed after orthodontic treatment.

A clinical assessment by your orthodontist or dentist would be best so they can advise you better on which option would give you the best result that you are most comfortable with.

Hope this helps!

Warm regards,
