Which are the best laser treatments to get rid of rosacea?

Doctor's Answers 1

There are 2 major components to Rosacea that are managed differently.

A. Inflammatory component. This presents with red bumps on the skin. The inflammatory component may be controlled with topical metronidazole (Rozex), topical ivermectin (Soolantra), oral doxycycline and oral isotretinoin depending on severity, tolerability and prior response.

B. Vascular component. This presents as diffuse redness, flushing and fine dilated blood vessels on the face. The vascular component may be treated with topical bromonidine (Mirvaso) and light-based devices such as the IPL and the 595nm pulsed-dye laser.

Avoiding aggravating factors such as UV radiation and spicy foods will also help control the activity of Rosacea.

Rosacea is the chronic relapsing skin inflammation and current treatments highlighted above seek mainly to control the condition and prevent flares rather than cure/rid the condition.

Is it advisable to use desonide in the long term for rosacea and skin itch?

Yes, Desonide is indeed a mild steroid cream. I’d strongly suggest seeing a dermatologist to help you with a treatment regimen tailored for your needs. Steroid creams should not be used long-term (more than 2 weeks at a time) because of possible side effects, including skin thinning. Some other options your doctor may recommend include topical/oral antibiotics (eg. metronidazole cream/gel or tetracycline), azelaic acid (Finacea), and beta-blockers.

Is laser hair removal safe for sensitive skin?

Good that the discoid eczema of your daughter is under control. In any case, Laser treatment may trigger or aggravate eczema, including discoid eczema. This could be due to the irritation from the laser itself or the scratching of the itch after the treatment. Darker skin may be more prone to irritation as well. Sun exposure or other activities (before or after the laser treatment) that cause dryness or darkening of the skin would certainly increase the risk.
